ABSTRACT

Background: Several researchers had found that garlic (Allium sativum) could prevent liver injury in rats intoxicated by CCl4 based on microscopic examinations. This study was proposed to prove that Allium sativum could decrease the level of serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in Wistar rats treated with carbon tetrachlorida (CCl4).
Methods: This research was a true experimental study with the post test only control group design. The samples were 15 female Wistar rats at the age of 4 months. The rats were randomly divided into 3 groups. Rats in group I were not given CCl4 nor Allium sativum, group II were given only a single dose of 0.275 mg CCl4 per gr BW at the 8th day, and group III were given a single dose of 10 g Allium sativum per kg BW per day for 8 days and a single dose of 0.275 mg CCl4 per gr BW at the 8th day. All the rats were killed at the 9th day. Blood samples taken from abdominal aorta were sent to laboratory for measuring the levels of SGPT,SGOT, and ALP.
Results: The mean level of SGPT in group I, II, and III were 83.20±5.98 U/L, 262.60±62.17 U/L, and 68.20±5.36 U/L. The mean level of SGOT in group I, II, and III were 227.80±26.61 U/L, 357.06±42.17 U/L, and 208.60±93.59 U/L. The mean level of ALP in group I, II, and III were 273.00±44.96 U/L, 395.00±94.03 U/L, and 174.20±46,84 U/L.
Conclusions: Allium sativum could significantly decrease the level of SGPT, SGOT, and ALP in Wistar rats treated with CCl4.

ABSTRAK

Latar belakang: Penelitian terdahulu melaporkan bahwa ekstrak bawang putih dapat mengurangi kerusakan hati tikus akibat pemberian CCl4 berdasarkan hasil pemeriksaan mikroskopis jaringan hati. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan bahwa bawang putih dapat menurunkan kadar SGPT, SGOT, dan ALP pada tikus Wistar yang diberi CCl4.
Metode: Rancangan penelitian ini adalah eksperimental murni dengan the post test only control group. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari lima belas ekor tikus Wistar betina, umur 4 bulan, secara random dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok, yaitu: kelompok I tanpa pemberian CCl4 dan bawang putih, kelompok II diberi 0,275 mg CCl4/grBB dosis tunggal pada hari ke-8, dan kelompok III diberi 10 gr bawang putih/kgBB/hari selama 8 hari dan 0,275 mg CCl4/grBB dosis tunggal pada hari ke-8. Pada hari ke-9 semua tikus diterminasi untuk pengambilan darah dari aorta abdominalis. Darah dikirim ke laboratorium untuk pemeriksaan kadar SGPT, SGOT, dan ALP.
Hasil: Rata-rata kadar SGPT pada kelompok I, II, dan III: 83,20±5,98 U/L, 262,60±62,17 U/L, dan 68,20±5,36 U/L. Rata-rata kadar SGOT pada kelompok I, II, dan III: 227,80±26,61 U/L, 357,06±42,17 U/L, dan 208,60±93,59 U/L. Rata-rata kadar ALP pada kelompok I, II, dan III: 273,00±44,96 U/L, 395,00±94,03 U/L, dan 174,20±46,84 U/L.
Kesimpulan: Bawang putih secara signifikan menurunkan kadar SGPT, SGOT, dan ALP pada tikus Wistar yang diberi perlakuan CCl4.
